When I first started freelancing, I chased every project I could. One-off blogs, random social content, bits of copy here and there.
I made it work, but it was exhausting. Everything changed when I landed my first proper retainer. That one decision reshaped my entire business.
Today, my freelance writing business is almost exclusively built on retainers. I work with six long-term clients, all paying me four figures per month. My largest retainer paid me $5.5k per month. Many of my clients stay with me for years - the longest has been four years and counting.
